Onward

Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 2026

Onward stores everything locally on your device. No data ever leaves your browser. There are no servers, no accounts, and no analytics.

What Onward collects

Onward stores the following information in your browser's local storage (chrome.storage.local):

Site configuration — the websites you choose to monitor and the daily time budgets you set for each one.

Usage data — time spent on monitored sites in the current session, accumulated daily totals, and whether a budget has been reached for the day.

Session history — a count of completed and skipped sessions for the current calendar day, used to display today's stats in the extension popup. This resets at midnight.

Skip log — the number of emergency skips used today and the reason you entered for each one. This also resets daily.

Where your data goes

Nowhere. All data is stored exclusively in chrome.storage.local on your own device. It is never transmitted to any server, never shared with any third party, and never used for advertising or analytics of any kind.

Onward has no backend, no user accounts, and no network requests beyond fetching its own bundled content file at startup.

Permissions and why they are needed

storage — to save your site configuration, budgets, and daily stats locally on your device.

alarms — to track time in the background using a periodic tick, so timing continues accurately while you switch tabs.

tabs — to detect when you navigate to or away from a monitored site, so the timer starts and stops correctly.

scripting — to inject the interrupt interface into monitored pages when your budget is reached.

Host permissions for specific sites — Onward only requests access to the sites you choose to monitor (YouTube, Reddit, X, TikTok, Instagram). It has no access to any other websites.

Data you can delete

All data can be permanently deleted at any time from the Settings page inside the extension. The "Reset all data" button clears everything Onward has ever stored.

Uninstalling the extension also removes all stored data.

Children's privacy

Onward does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children. Because no data leaves your device, this policy applies equally to all users.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a revised date. Onward will never introduce data collection without updating this policy first.
